A Complete NDT Facility Requires More Than Equipment
Establishing a new non-destructive testing facility or upgrading an existing inspection operation requires coordinated engineering across multiple disciplines. Inspection equipment must match the methods required for your components, the facility layout must support efficient workflow, and utilities and environmental controls must support each inspection technology safely and reliably.
Altair Systems manages the entire facility development process — from inspection needs analysis and process flow engineering through equipment supply, installation, commissioning and final qualification. Our goal is to deliver inspection facilities that are operational, compliant and ready to produce reliable inspection results from the first day of operation.
Scope of Services
- Inspection Needs Analysis – Evaluation of component types, inspection standards, production volumes and regulatory requirements to determine the inspection technologies and throughput required.
- Facility Layout and Workflow Engineering – Design of inspection workflows, material flow paths, staging areas and operator workspaces to optimise safety, efficiency and inspection throughput.
- Equipment Selection and Specification – Supply and specification of automated systems, inspection instruments, calibration blocks, reference standards and supporting equipment required for facility operation.
- Infrastructure and Utilities Design – Engineering coordination for structural, electrical, ventilation and water systems required to support inspection technologies including immersion UT, FPI processing, radiography shielding and ventilation systems.
- Installation and Commissioning – System installation, equipment integration and commissioning performed by Altair Systems engineers to ensure each inspection station meets operational and performance requirements.
- Procedure Development and Qualification – Preparation of written inspection procedures and qualification to relevant standards including ASME, API, ASTM, EN ISO and other customer-specific specifications.
- Operator Training and Qualification Support – Training programmes for inspection personnel covering equipment operation, inspection procedures and qualification support for certification programmes.
- Regulatory and Customer Approval Support – Assistance with regulatory approvals and quality audits including ISO 17025 laboratory accreditation, NADCAP certification and class society approvals.
Inspection Methods Covered
- Ultrasonic Testing (UT) including PAUT, TOFD and advanced ultrasonic imaging methods
- Radiographic Testing (RT) including film, computed radiography and digital detector arrays
- Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI) including fluorescent and visible inspection systems
- Liquid Penetrant Inspection (LPI / FPI) including manual and automated penetrant lines
- Eddy Current Testing (ECT / ECA) for surface and tube inspection
- Visual Inspection (VT) including borescopes, remote visual inspection systems and video inspection tools
Facility Types
- Manufacturing Inspection Facilities – Integrated inspection stations designed for in-process and post-process quality inspection within production environments.
- MRO Inspection Centres – Multi-method inspection facilities supporting maintenance, repair and overhaul operations across aerospace, energy and heavy industry sectors.
- Standalone NDT Laboratories – Independent inspection laboratories designed to support ISO 17025 accreditation and third-party inspection services.
- Greenfield and Brownfield Projects – Development of new NDT facilities or expansion and modernisation of existing inspection operations.
Why Altair Systems
Many facility projects are approached purely as construction or equipment installation exercises. Altair Systems approaches every project as an inspection engineering challenge first. Our team understands how inspection technologies behave in real industrial environments and how to design facilities that support reliable inspection performance.
This approach ensures that every facility we deliver is engineered for inspection reliability, operational efficiency and long-term compliance with the standards required by your industry.
